  1. SecureGroup - Protect your Program Manager

  6. This is version 1.15 of SecureGroup.
  7.  
  8. SecureGroup lets you protect your program manager by protecting the program
  9. manager groups with passwords and setting restrictions to the functions of
  10. the program manager.
  11.  
  12. SecureGroup requires Windows 3.1.

  18. With SecureGroup you choose which program manager group you want to protect
  19. with passwords.
  20. If you want to open a protected group you have to enter a password. The
  21. administrator of the system sets up as many user groups as he likes. Each
  22. user group has a password, and for each user group the administrator assigns
  23. which program manager group a member of the user group may open.
  24. If a member of a user group opens a protected program manager group he has
  25. to enter the group password, and if his user group has the right to open
  26. the program manager group he can access the program items in this group.
  27.  
  28. The password of the administrator opens any program manager group.
  29.  
  30. To prevent a user from running a program with the RUN command of the
  31. Program Manager or changing the properties of a program item, SecureGroup
  32. allows you to set restrictions to your program manager.
  33.  
  34. There are several levels of restrictions:
  35.  
  36. 1) Disable 'Run' command on the 'File' menu:
  37.    The Run command will appear dimmed on the File menu and the user will not
  38.    be able to run applications from Program Manager unless the applications
  39.    are set up as icons in a group.
  40.  
  41. 2) Remove the 'File' menu:
  42.    All of the commands on that menu will be unavailable. Users can start the
  43.    applications in groups by selecting them and pressing ENTER, or by
  44.    double-clicking the icon. Unless you have also disabled the Exit Windows
  45.    command, users can still quit Windows by using the Control menu or ALT+F4.

  47. 3) Disable the 'Save Settings on Exit' command on the 'Options' menu:
  48.    The Save Settings command will appear dimmed on the Options menu and any
  49.    changes that the user makes to the arrangement of windows and icons will
  50.    not be saved when Windows is restarted.
  51.  
  52. 4) Disable 'Exit Windows: command on the File menu.
  53.    Users will not be able to quit Program Manager through the File Menu or
  54.    the Control menu (the Exit Windows and Close commands will be dimmed), or
  55.    by using ALT+F4.

  57. 5) Restrictions for modifying groups
  58.    1) No creating, deleting, or renaming of groups:
  59.       prevents the user from creating, deleting, or renaming groups. If you
  60.       specify this setting, the New, Move, Copy, and Delete commands on
  61.       the File menu are not available when a group is selected.
  62.    2) + no creating or deleting of program items:
  63.       sets all restrictions of 1), plus prevents the user from creating or
  64.       deleting program items. If you specify this setting, the New, Move,
  65.       Copy, and Delete commands on the File menu are not available at all.
  66.    3) + no changing command lines for program items:
  67.       sets all restrictions of 2), plus prevents the user from changing
  68.       command lines for program items. If you specify this setting, the text
  69.       in the Command Line box in the Properties dialog box cannot be changed.
  70.    4) + no changing any program item information:
  71.       sets all restrictions of 3), plus prevents the user from changing any
  72.       program item information. If you specify this setting, none of the
  73.       areas in the Properties dialog box can be modified. The user can view
  74.       the dialog box, but all of the areas are dimmed.

  76. If you want to prevent a user from starting an application,
  77. you have to set the restrictions 1) and 4.1) to 4.4).

  79. You can also have a log file for events.

  82. SecureGroup is invisible. If you want to change the settings or want to end
  83. SecureGroup, you have to start it a second time. But you have to enter the
  84. password of the administrator to see the configuration dialog.

  86. During startup SecureGroup tries to detect if your Windows is configured
  87. for German language or not. If it senses it, SecureGroup will use German
  88. language and if not SecureGroup uses English language. If you want to ignore
  89. the default language you can add the following parameters to the call of
  90. SecureGroup:

  92. SECGRP.EXE /D : German language
  93. SECGRP.EXE /E : English language

  96. The first time you start SecureGroup, you will see the a dialog with some
  97. instructions.

  101. Configuration of SecureGroup:
  102. =============================

  104. In the configuration dialog of SecureGroup you will see:
  105. - a listbox on the left side:
  106.   In this listbox you will see all user groups.
  107. - a listbox on the right side:
  108.   Here you see all protected program manager groups.
  109. - a button to add a new user group:
  110.   With this button you create a new user group. Each user group has
  111.   a unique name and a password.
  112. - a button to change the selected user group:
  113.   You can change the name and the password of the selected user group.
  114. - a button to delete the selected user group:
  115.   With this button you can delete the selected user group
  116. - a button to show a dialog for log file options:
  117.   With this dialog you can select which events will be logged. You can also
  118.   enter the log file and the option to have the file attributes hidden and
  119.   system set for your log file.
  120.   If you don't enter a log file, no events are logged.
  121. - a button to show the administrator dialog:
  122.   In the administrator dialog you will see a list with all program manager
  123.   groups. Selected groups will be password protected.
  124.   You can also set a timeout for opened protected program manager groups.
  125.   After this time (in seconds) an opened protected group will automatically
  126.   be closed.
  127.   Here you can also set the restrictions for the program manager and
  128.   you can change the administrator password.
  129.   With the option 'Use different icon for protected groups' you can choose if
  130.   you want to see a different icon for protected program manager groups.
  131.   You can also set an option so you can only exit Windows by entering the
  132.   password of the administrator.

  135. If you select a user group in the left listbox, all program manager
  136. groups that are in this group and are allowed to open are marked in the right
  137. list. You can change this by selecting or deselecting the entries in the
  138. right listbox.

  142. Installation of SecureGroup:
  143. ============================

  145. - Copy all files into the Windows directory
  146. - Add SECGRP.EXE to the line LOAD= in your WIN.INI.
  147.   Note: It is recommended to start SecureGroup with the load command and not
  148.         by adding an item to your Startup group, because you can disable
  149.         the execution of this group if you hold down 'SHIFT' when you start
  150.         Windows.

  158. are not changed and you distribute all files together

  165. I am programming SecureGroup for fun, and not to make any profit.
  166. That's why SecureGroup is free and you don't have to pay more or less high
  167. registration charges. I think it is a bad habit, that more and more program
  168. authors want to have money even for the smallest program.
